WES Renewal vs. Upgrade: What to Do if Your Report is About to Expire.

Getting a WES report isn't a "one-and-done" deal for everyone. If you received your ECA (Educational Credential Assessment) years ago and are still in the Express Entry pool, or if you’ve recently landed in Canada, you might be facing a critical question: Should I renew or upgrade?

At Prep with Daljeet, we help you navigate these technicalities so you don't lose precious time or CRS points. Here is everything you need to know about keeping your WES report active and useful for 2026.

⏳ The 5-Year Rule: When Does It Expire?

Your WES ECA report is valid for exactly five years from the date of issue for IRCC purposes.1

  • The Risk: If your report is 4 years and 11 months old when you get an ITA (Invitation to Apply), but it expires before you submit your final PR application, your application will be refused.

  • The Solution: You must renew it if it's nearing that 5-year mark.2

🔄 Scenario 1: The Renewal (Extension)

Who it’s for: Applicants still outside Canada who need more time in the Express Entry pool.

If your report is about to expire but you don't have new degrees to add, you simply need a Renewal.

  • How to do it: Log in to your WES account and select "Order Duplicate IRCC." * The Result: WES will issue a fresh copy of your report with a new date, extending its validity for another 5 years.3

  • The Cost: It typically costs around $33–$50 CAD (plus delivery/tax), much cheaper than a full new evaluation!4

🆙 Scenario 2: The Upgrade (Adding Value)

Who it’s for: People who have completed a new degree, or those already in Canada looking for jobs.

An Upgrade is different from a simple renewal. You aren't just extending the date; you are changing the content or the type of the report.

1. Adding a New Credential

If you got your ECA for your Bachelor’s in 2022 but finished your Master’s in 2025, you need to Upgrade.5

  • Why: A Master's degree significantly increases your CRS points.

  • Process: Choose "Upgrade Report" in your dashboard and add the new degree details.

2. Converting ECA to Standard (Job Seekers)

The ECA you used for PR is specifically formatted for immigration.6 Many Canadian employers or licensing bodies (like for teaching or engineering) prefer a Course-by-Course (CxC) evaluation.7

  • The Benefit: Standard WES reports (Document-by-Document or Course-by-Course) never expire.8 They are valid for life!

  • Prep with Daljeet Tip: If you have already received your PR and are moving to Canada, upgrade to a Course-by-Course report. It helps Canadian employers understand your GPA and specific subjects.
