How to Handle CELPIP Speaking Task 8 – Describing an Unusual Situation

Introduction

CELPIP Speaking Task 8 can feel challenging because it asks you to describe something unusual or unexpected. The goal is not to panic but to explain clearly, step by step, what happened, who was involved, and how you reacted.

Task Overview

  • You’ll be given a prompt describing an unusual situation.

  • Preparation time: 30 seconds

  • Speaking time: 90 seconds

  • Goal: Describe the situation with details, emotions, and logical sequence.

Common Mistakes in Task 8
❌ Panicking due to the “weird” scenario
❌ Giving too little detail (answering in 2–3 sentences only)
❌ Poor organization (jumping randomly)
❌ Using repetitive or basic words like “strange” or “funny”

Strategies for Success
Organize your response:

  1. Set the scene – Where, when, who

  2. Describe the unusual event – What exactly happened

  3. Explain your reaction – Feelings, actions, response

  4. Wrap up – Why it was unusual or memorable\

Use descriptive language:

  • “Suddenly…”

  • “Out of nowhere…”

  • “I couldn’t believe my eyes when…”

Stay calm & creative: The examiner is testing fluency and organization, not whether the story is true.
