WES Evaluation 101: Everything You Need to Know Before You Start.

If you’re just starting your journey toward Canada PR, you’ve probably heard the term ECA or WES mentioned a hundred times. But what is it really, and why do you need to get it right before you do anything else?

At Prep with Daljeet, we simplify the complex. Consider this your "WES 101" masterclass for 2026.

πŸ›️ What is a WES Evaluation?

World Education Services (WES) is a non-profit organization designated by the Canadian government (IRCC) to provide an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA).

In simple terms: WES takes your Indian degree (like a B.Com from DU or a B.Tech from VTU) and tells Canada what it is equivalent to in the Canadian education system.

Why you need it:

  1. CRS Points: Without a WES ECA, your education is worth 0 points in the Express Entry pool.

  2. Eligibility: To enter the Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) program, an ECA is a mandatory requirement.

  3. Proof of Authenticity: It proves to Canadian authorities that your degrees are genuine and from recognized Indian institutions.

πŸ“‹ The "Must-Have" List Before You Apply

Before you even create a WES account, make sure you have these three things ready:

  • Your Degree Certificate: You need a clear, scanned copy of your final degree (not just the provisional).

  • University Contacts: You need to know which department in your university handles "Transcripts." In India, this is usually the Controller of Examinations or the Registrar.

  • Your Passport: Ensure the name you use on WES matches your passport exactly to avoid identity mismatches later.

🚢‍♂️ The 5-Step Process (At a Glance)

  1. Create a Profile: Choose the ECA for IRCC package on the WES website.

  2. Get Your Reference Number: Pay the fee (approx. $248 CAD) to get your unique 7-digit number.

  3. Request Transcripts: Ask your university to send your mark sheets directly to WES (Digitally is best!).

  4. Verification: WES reviews your documents. This is where most people get stuck if they didn't follow the instructions!

  5. Final Report: WES issues your electronic report, which you can then use to create your Express Entry profile.

⚠️ The "Golden Rule" for 2026

Never send original documents to WES unless they specifically ask for them. WES generally only requires official transcripts sent directly by your university and scanned copies of your degree certificates uploaded by you. Sending your original degree in the mail is a recipe for heartbreak!

πŸ’‘ Prep with Daljeet Pro-Tip

Many Indian students make the mistake of starting WES after they get their IELTS results. Don’t do this. WES can take 1–2 months (or more if your university is slow). Start your WES process the same day you start your IELTS/CELPIP preparation to save yourself months of waiting!
